   Key words and motifs in the story of Ruth and Boaz are compared with two earlier Biblical stories: the story of Lot and his daughters (Ruth’s ancestors) and the story of Yehuda and Tamar (ancestors of Boaz). The story of Ruth and Boaz Ruth and Boaz is a tikkun for these earlier stories, as they subvert Naomi's plan.

   This shiur begins by examines the episode of Ba’al-Pe’or and contrasts it with the sin of the Golden Calf. The story of Nadav and Avihu is also compared with Pinchas. By contrasting Nadav and Abihu and their initiative with Pinchas, who jumps into the fray, we gain insight into the limits of zeal and the “tikkun” aspect of the motivations of Pinchas.

   Every time we read the Book of Ruth, a seemingly short and simple story, we find something new that we haven’t seen before. In this shiur, we focus on Naomi, who effectively orchestrates much of what happens with Ruth in Beth Lechem. We look at what is going on in the Megilla, and we add context by examining the role of the tribe of Yehuda in parts of the book of Shoftim, and the meaning of certain names of God.  People often speak of Megillat Ruth as a form of tikkun - symbolic repair - for what came before, and Naomi is at the center of this tikkun.
